Coffee intensity – what is it, and what does it mean?

7min

Coffee intensity – a sliding scale

Roast type and intensity are not the same thing; however, the roast is part of the aspects that  impact the end-result of the coffee intensity. The world of coffee is complex, and there’s so much more than one simple factor to base your coffee choices on. Each roast type – Starbucks Blonde® Roast, Starbucks® Medium Roast, and Starbucks® Dark Roast– offers a range of intensities. Let’s focus in on coffee intensity: what it means for coffee and what it means for you.

By the numbers

Coffee intensity is usually represented by a number that appears on the packaging. With Starbucks® by Nespresso® coffees, we rate their intensity from 1 – 13: 1 being the least intense and 13 being the most intense.

Coffee intensity – does it mean more caffeine?
The answer is No.

Coffee intensity is not necessarily related to the caffeine level; more intense coffee does not necessarily mean more caffeine. Intensity is driven by different factors such as roasting degree, roasted taste, body, texture, and bitterness

Coffee intensity vs coffee taste notes

"Although a coffee’s intensity is linked to its taste notes, you’ll still find unique aromas and subtle flavours – even across the same intensity and roast type.

The roast type is a contributor to the overall intensity and taste notes of a cup of coffee. It’s also important to remember that, although intensity and taste notes are connected, they do not necessarily impact one another. You'll still find unique aromas and subtle flavours even across the same intensity."

Coffee intensity vs coffee taste notes

Although a coffee’s intensity is linked to its taste notes, you’ll still find unique aromas and subtle flavours – even across the same intensity and roast type.

A general rule of thumb is that a lighter roast means low intensity flavours that have notes that are smooth and not overpowering. A medium roast coffee is generally known for striking an equal level between the acidity and sweetness of the beans. They tend to have a moderate quantity of acidity, a good amount of body, and a range of flavour notes that are well-rounded. Dark roast is less-acidic, full-bodied and rich in taste. It can be an acquired taste, but once converted, you may find it hard to return to a lighter roast.

The Starbucks® Roast Spectrum
Starbucks® by Nespresso® coffees are made with 100% Arabica beans, which are known for making coffee that’s slightly sweeter and smoother than coffee  generally made with Robusta beans, which you won’t find in the Starbucks® range.

By expertly roasting the Arabica beans according to the Starbucks® Roast Spectrum, we create the full Starbucks® by Nespresso® range with intensities for every coffee lover.

Our least intense coffee begins at 4 on the scale – lightly roasted, but full of flavour and aroma. At the opposite end of the spectrum, our strong coffees can have an intensity of up to 13.

Between those two sides of the intensity scale, lies the Starbucks Blonde® Roast, medium, and dark roast"" – all with their own intensity, flavour, and coffee experience.
