Starbucks® Coffee Tasting Notes

6 min

TASTING YOUR COFFEE

It begins with that first, aromatic whiff of coffee that you recognize by a distinct nuttiness or caramel scent because you’ve known and longed for it.

TASTING YOUR COFFEE

The four steps to coffee tasting

Coffee tasting is a continuous art that has more to offer, every time you engage.

This is a sensory journey that walks you through everything you need to know and communicate about the rich profile of flavours of your coffee. It aims to give you a meaningful experience with every cup of Starbucks® coffee you enjoy.

Starbucks® uses the highest quality arabica coffee beans (which represents 60% of the world’s coffee production), so you’ll have plenty of flavours and notes to experience.

Unlocking the flavours and tasting notes in every single coffee bean is how we turn every cup of Starbucks® coffee into an experience.

You don't need to be a coffee expert to fully appreciate the aromas, the flavours, the sweetness and the acidity in every cup of Starbucks® you enjoy. We've simplifed it into 4 coffee-tasting characteristics, and 4 steps to not only enjoy, but appreciate every cup of Starbucks®coffee you make at home.

TASTING CHARACTERISTICS

The four tasting characteristics for coffee are: AROMA, ACIDITY, BODY and FLAVOUR.

You can compare and contrast the coffee by identifying the four tasting characteristics for each:

Aroma: the smell whether earthy, spicy, floral, nutty, or other.

Acidity: you can feel this on the sides and tip of your tongue and sometimes, the back of your jawbone. High acidity coffees are described as bright, tangy, and crisp while low acidity coffees feel smooth and linger.

Body: coffee can either feel light or full in weight. This can be likened to comparing whole and fat-free milk.

Flavour: the taste seals the experience. This can be registered in different parts of the mouth. Some taste like citrus, cocoa and berries are obvious, and others are subtle.
